GRADUATING COLLEGE AT 18, SHE WAS ONE OF THE FIRST BLACK STUDENTS INTEGRATED INTO WEST VIRGINIA'S GRADUATE SCHOOLS. AFTER BEING REJECTED BY NASA ONCE, SHE APPLIED AGAIN AND WAS ONE OF THE FIRST MATHEMATICIANS TO SEND THE FIRST MAN TO THE MOON.

SHE WAS CAPTURED AND SOLD INTO SLAVERY AT AGE 7. SHE STARTED WRITING POETRY AT AGE 13. MANY COULDN'T BELIEVE THAT HER POEMS WERE WRITTEN BY HER SO SHE HAD TO PROVE HERSELF IN FRONT OF A PANEL. SHE GREW UP TO BE THE FIRST PUBLISHED AFRICAN-AMERICAN WOMAN PAVING THE WAY FOR OTHERS.

MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. HER MOST NOTABLE ACCOMPLISHMENT WAS PRESIDENT FRANKLIN D. ROSSERVELT WHICH IS THE IMAGE FOUND ON THE DIME.

BORN IN MONROE, NORTH CAROLINA, SHE WAS THE FIRST AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMAN TO INVENT A SANITARY BELT IN 1956 AND A BATHROOM TISSUE HOLDER IN 1982. THE SANITARY BELT IS KNOWN TODAY AS A SANITARY NAPKIN THAT WE USE DURING OUR MONTHLY CYCLES. THE SANITARY NAPKIN WAS PATENTED 30 YEARS LATER AFTER REJECTION WHEN A COMPANY FOND OUT SHE WAS AFRICAN AMERICAN.
